Jake Kumma first got into fishing through his father, who was working in nearby village Elfin Cove, and got him a job as a deckhand with the Elfin Cove Lodge. After two years in tourism, Jake transitioned to a commercial boat, and 11 years later, finally bought his own. Like many, fishing runs in his family. He and his dad enjoyed recreational casting, and his grandfather was a commercial tuna fisherman out of Washington State.
During the off season, Jake migrates farther than most: he lives in Cairns, Australia with his beautiful Australian wife, Wendy, and a furry little pup named Oly. During the season, they fish together on the Sanctuary.
Jake sells his fish to Yakobi because "I love that they take the salmon industry so seriously and they only want good, well-taken-care-of, pressure-bled fish." And in support of the wild Alaskan fishing industry in general, he adds "Friends don’t let friends eat farmed fish!" Hear hear.
